Zürich Opera House

A home for muses, a place for art

The Zurich Opera House was the first Opera House in all of Europe that had electric lighting. The neo-baroque theatre building in front of the Sechseläuten green space on the shore of Lake Zürich was built in 1891 upon 1,800 oak piles. The first opera performed there was Richard Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’.

The history of the Zurich Opera House is full of highlights: Wilhelm Furtwängler started his career here, and Richard Wagner’s ‘Parsifal’ was performed here in 1913 – the first time it had ever been performed outside Bayreuth. Ferruccio Busoni, Paul Hindemith, Richard Strauss, Othmar Schoeck, Arthur Honegger, Frank Martin and other famous composers all influenced the development of Zürich’s musical and theatrical life.

The Zurich Opera House is considered one of the best venues in the world for opera. In more than 270 performances per season, such international singing stars as Anna Netrebko, Cecilia Bartoli or Jonas Kaufmann and many others can be experienced live at the Zurich Opera House.

Dadahaus Cabaret Voltaire

The Dada art movement was founded in 1916 in the Cabaret Voltaire, on Spiegelgasse, as a “protest against the madness of the times”. Artists, musicians, dancers and literati met in the Cabaret Voltaire and called the entire existing art into question.

The reopening of the Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich’s Old Town in October 2004 marked the beginning of a brand new Dada era. Nowadays, the Dadahaus, with its exhibitions, events and bar, as well as its small specialized lending library, is open to the public. Dada enthusiasts will particularly enjoy a stay at the Hotel Limmatblick, where all of the rooms are individually decorated in Dada style.

Dining Under Works of Art

The Restaurant Kronenhalle was once a meeting point for musicians, actors, literati and artists. Some of them paid with works of art, with the result that today guests can dine at this establishment – a popular haunt among the rich and famous – under genuine Chagalls, Picassos and Mirós.

A more modern style of art can be admired in the small Spiegelsaal (Mirror Room) at the Restaurants Segantini. Here, the sun shines whatever the weather; the installations by multimedia artist Ugo Rondinone, sculpted from thousands of mirror fragments, together with the reflected orchids, radiate a touch of exotic glamour.

For those favoring the ambience created by elegant, history-steeped dining rooms, the guild houses are ideal venues.

Swiss National Museum

The Swiss National Museum was built by Gustav Gull in 1898 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the first federal constitution. The National Museum houses Switzerland's most comprehensive collection of artifacts pertaining to its cultural heritage. The more than 100-year-old museum building is reminiscent of a fairytale castle. Surrounded by towers, the courtyard is a unique venue for superlative events. The past comes to life indoors: How did earlier generations live, think and feel? Their material legacy - from handicrafts to ordinary everyday objects - provides us with answers from the prehistoric age right through to the present day. The National Museum also stages special exhibitions on topics relevant to society, thus offering temporary changes in perspective.

Filmfestival Zürich

The Zurich Film Festival provides its large audience with an inside look at the work of young up-and-coming filmmakers from around the world and awards the coveted "Goldenes Auge" prize in the competitive category.
Every September, Zürich transforms into a film capital for 11 days and offers the public the chance to view 70 new film premières also attended by well-known actors and directors. Countless supporting events invite you to discuss the films you have seen and end your evening at the movies on a perfect note.

The next Zurich Film Festival takes place from September 23 to October 3, 2011.

Museum of Civil Defense

With the worldwide increase in armaments, particularly of nuclear weapons, the protection of the civilian population also became an important issue for a neutral country like Switzerland.
For this reason, Switzerland’s Air Defense was transformed into a civil protection organization in the 1950s. Similar organizations exist today in many countries. The construction of secure shelters in residential buildings became obligatory throughout Switzerland as of 1963.

The Museum’s extensive collection includes numerous well-preserved original objects, such as blackout lamps, gas masks, field kitchens or food ration coupons.

Whether it be rescue equipment or surgical instruments, the exhibits on display convey a unique museum atmosphere.

The Oskar Reinhart Collection «Am Römerholz» in Winterthur is one of the most distinguished private collections of the 20th century. Oskar Reinhart (1885–1965) had a keen eye for fine European art from the fourteenth to early twentieth century. Oskar Reinhart Winterthur, Stadtgarten

On exhibition at the Oskar Reinhart Museum «Am Stadtgarten» are around 600 paintings by German, Swiss and Austrian artists dating from the 18th to the 20th century. We owe this to the Winterthur art patron Oskar Reinhart.

Oskar Reinhart came from a wealthy Winterthur family and he shaped the artistic life of the city like no other. Starting at an early age, Reinhart committed himself to establishing his collection. One thing was clear: his art treasures were to be made accessible to the public. Oskar Reinhart's passion for art is still noticeable today when you wander through the rooms of the museum at the city park. The rooms, affectionately equipped with stylish period furniture, lend the museum a private atmosphere and invite you to stay.

Villa Flora

The Villa Flora features French paintings from the 19th and 20th century in the former private villa of dedicated collectors Hedy and Arthur Hahnloser-Bühler.

Today the treasure trove of paintings owned by the Hahnlosers is exhibited in changing exhibitions, organized by the Trägerverein Flora (supporting association), in invariably new, appealing contexts. With its authentic ambience and secluded garden Villa Flora, embellished by the museum architects Rittmeyer and Furrer, contributes to the pure enjoyment of art. In addition to the exhibitions, public guided tours, family Sundays, and topical events are on offer and Villa Flora is open to private groups even outside of normal opening hours.
And it’s all just 20 minutes away from Zürich City.

Experience and discover the museums of Winterthur with the Winterthur museum pass: CHF 20 for 1 day (excluding Technorama and Kyburg), CHF 30 for 2 days (excluding Kyburg). The museum pass is available at Winterthur Tourismus or at the museums.

Watch and Clock Museum Beyer Zürich

The Beyer Clock and Watch Museum in Zürich is home to one of the most significant private collections anywhere in the world. The museum has around 500 timepieces dating from 1400 B.C. to the present, starting out with basic non-mechanical clocks (sundials, scientific measuring instruments from the 16th and 17th centuries, oil clocks from southern Germany, hour-glasses and shepherd clocks) or magnificent clocks such as the Nuremberg tower clock dating from 1580.

Zoological Museum of the University of Zürich

The Museum of Zoology will transport you into the animal kingdom through sight, touch, and hearing.
Here both grown-ups and children can look through microscopes to study the beauty of tiny invertebrates or listen to the sounds of over 300 animals - from humming insects to whale songs. The variety of shapes, colors and structures in the animal world creates a sensation of awe and pleasure. The skeleton of a mammoth and the many models of rare and extinct species remind us of the changes taking place in the animal kingdom and of our responsibility for nature. Slide-shows, films and videos complete the exhibition.

Zürich Toy Museum

Housed in one of the oldest corners of the old town, this beautiful collection of European toys from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century reflects the life of these periods in miniature. Railways and steam engines bear witness to the technical revolution, dolls and their dresses illustrate fashion trends, and doll houses mirror the interiors of times now long past. Tin figures, old games, wooden toys, children's books, toy kitchens, all can be found here.
