Swiss National Day celebrations

The celebrations surrounding Swiss National Day will kick off at 10:30 a.m. with a procession from Werdmühleplatz via Bahnhofstrasse to Bürkliplatz. Swiss customs will be presented in a colourful, cheerful manner.

The ceremony will be followed by a public festival with folklore.

And the gold and platinum awards for his latest works have long been confirmed through jam-packed concert halls and open-air arenas. With sales of over 100 million CDs and 6 million concerts tickets we need say no more – and at 76 years of age Udo Jürgens is still going strong and remains a great creative musician who succeeds in fascinating people of all ages!

Zurich New Years Eve run

Organizers are once again expecting some 16,000 runners for this year's'tradition-steeped race through Zürich's old city center and the Bahnhofstrasse. The New Year's Eve Run provides a unique opportunity to run through the brightly decorated car-free Old Town. Various distances are featured, ranging from 1.4 to 8.6 km. The Zürcher New Year's Eve Run regularly features some of the world's elite runners.

«Lichterschwimmen» floating candles on the Limmat River

800 little floating candles are traditionally launched from the Stadthausquai on an atmospheric journey on the Limmat River. At Weinplatz, Zürich Tourism offers its guests warm punch and something sweet.

New Year's Magic with firework display

On New Year's Eve, the legendary New Year's Eve fireworks display enchants spectators in the Zürich lake basin.

Each year, around 200 000 party-goers from Switzerland and abroad visit the country’s biggest New
Year’s Eve party to gaze up at the brightly lit night sky.

The festivities kick off at 8 p.m. with drinks and culinary delights from all over the world, followed by a countdown to the new year and the famous New Year's Eve fireworks of the Zurich hoteliers’ association.

Zürich Marathon

42.195 km along Zürich’s lakefront. The beautifully varied route has almost no ascents, with less than 30 metres of climbing, making possible fast race times. Spectators and athletes can expect numerous festivities in the lakeside towns, as well as a large marquee and a children's paradise in the Landiwiese meadow.

Kunsthaus Zürich: Adrian Zingg – Precursor of Romanticism

The Kunsthaus Zürich presents the first museum exhibition of one of the most influential exponents of landscape between the European Enlightenment and Pre-Romanticism in Dresden. Zingg’s largeformat sepia plates influenced an entire generation, right through to C. D. Friedrich and L. Richter. His choice of motifs and interpretation of landscape also influenced souvenir production in the early days of tourism. The exhibition is being organized by the Staatliche Kunstsammlung, Dresden in cooperation with the Kunsthaus Zürich.

Kunsthaus Zürich: Riotous Barock. From Cattelan to Zurbaran

Manifestations of Precarious Vitality

The German word ‘deftig’ is itself Baroque. Its etymology can be traced back to 17th-century Dutch, when it meant ‘capable, strong, powerful, solid.’ In this exhibition, it is art that is ‘deftig,’ in its directness and vitality. The word’s current meaning – ‘hefty, substantial, dramatic’ – is perhaps also reflected in the idea of a confrontation between works from two widely separated periods.

Kunsthaus Zürich: Rosa Barba

Rosa Barba is one of the most important artists working in film of her generation worldwide, and has made a name for herself through appearances in major international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale 2009 as well as solo shows at respected venues including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2010).

The Kunsthaus Zürich is the first museum in Switzerland to devote a solo exhibition to the artist. She is producing new works specifically for the show, which will be presented exclusively in the Kunsthaus. At the core of Rosa Barba’s work is the medium of film: she breaks it down and analyses it, employing it not only as an image carrier but also as material for her sculptural installations. These are intricate works in which analysis is strikingly combined with sensuality.

Zurich Pride Festival

The Zurich Pride Festival from June 8 - June 17, 2012 includes the Zurich Pride Week, an opening and closing party, 2 days Festival area with bars, food and big stage shows, several gay and lesbian orientated parties, LGBT themed conventions, cultural and cinematic shows as well as a politically motivated party parade throughout the city centre. Up to 40'000 visitors are expected to join this festival.

Mummenschanz

40 Years of MUMMENSCHANZ – a spectacular show based on four decades of Swiss theatrical art. This is a revue spanning several generations and covering the entire MUMMENSCHANZ history, from the changes to the face and body masks to the introduction of inflatable plastic figures and even further back to the marionette-like figures. Only one thing has remained unchanged during the 40 years – MUMMENSCHANZ speaks a language without words that every person on earth understands nevertheless.

The Zürich Festival will enchant visitors once again this year with its unique combination of opera, concert, dance, theater and art.

«il TAVOLO» Food Festival

Come to Switzerland’s longest dining table in Zürich! The city is holding its first Food Festival from 27 June to 1 July 2012. Caliente, festival tropical

Tropical atmosphere, hot South American rhythms and a unique combination of live concerts, dance shows and markets draw more than 100,000 visitors to Zürich every year. This is the largest festival for Latin American culture in the German-speaking countries.


All around Langstrasse (Longstreet), numerous live performances will be held. The Mercado Mundial is another attraction with 200 market stalls, culinary specialities, exotic drinks and craftwork from all over the world.

International Youth Music Festival Zurich

This year, around 75 orchestras comprising some 3,500 young musicians will be traveling to Zürich to attend the International Youth Music Festival. They will be taking the opportunity to participate in an international competition for wind orchestras, brass bands and music show groups. Besides the official opening ceremony at the Letzigrund soccer stadium, the supporting program includes an inauguration parade and the Youth Music Disco Party.

Museum Rietberg: The Beauty of the Moment

Women in Japanese Woodcuts: Capturing the fleeting moment is a crucial element of Japanese woodcut art and it is summarised by the term ukiyo-e, pictures of the floating world. In the bijin-ga genre - pictures of beautiful women - the subjects are glimpsed in all their transient charm. The confident gaze of a graceful beauty or an intimate, private scene inspired the woodcut artists of the 18th century to create masterpieces.
The loans come from the collection of the famous novelist James A. Michener (1907-1997) which today is kept in the Academy of Arts in Honolulu.

Zürcher Theater Spektakel

When the summer is coming to a close, the Zürcher Theater Spektakel (Zürich Theatre Spectacle) once again presents the magic of open-air theater at its very best: Since 1980, the Zürcher Theater Spektakel has been continuously developing as one of the most important European festivals for contemporary performing arts. Street artists come here from all over the world to participate in this international theatre festival on the Landiwiese meadow on Lake Zürich, to polish their skills.

Kunsthaus Zürich: Paul Gauguin. The graphic works

Paul Gauguin (1848 â?? 1903) is universally celebrated as one of the founding fathers of modern painting. What is far less known, however, is that he left a relatively small but diverse and innovative repertoire of graphic works, most of them woodcuts. Gauguin found in woodcuts the ideal expressive medium for his non-illusionistic style, with its emphasis on the plane. Yet while his paintings chiefly depict the serene and carefree side of life in the South Seas, the woodcuts also reveal the unfathomable, nocturnal and demonic aspect of the tropical paradise.


The exhibition will present almost the entirety of Gauguinâ??s graphic work, with some 60 plates of supreme quality and the utmost rarity.

Museum Rietberg: CHAVÍN - The Arrival of the Gods in the Andes

Peruvian culture is one of the oldest in the world. Recent archaeological discoveries show that societies in the central Andes erected monumental ceremonial buildings as early as the 4th millennium BC. Chavín is regarded as the mother culture of the Andes and shaped life there in the 2nd and 1st millennia BC.

In close collaboration with Peru and with leading archaeologists from across the globe, Museum Rietberg presents the latest discoveries from Peru and the first Chavín exhibition in the world.

Sixday-Nights Zürich

Museum Rietberg: Heroes - A New Perspective on the Art of Africa

Artists throughout the ages have faced the challenge of representing eminent people in sculpture. Taking the example of eight regions in West and Central Africa with different artistic traditions, the exhibition shows how artists depicted important figures from the pre-colonial era: founders of states, heroic warriors, or monarchs venerated by the people, who are known to us through mythology, literature, oral traditions and historical texts.

Ewigi Liebi - Eternal Love

â??Ewigi Liebiâ?? or Eternal Love is the musical with the most well-known Swiss German hits. By now, over 600,000 people have enjoyed the most successful musical performed in Swiss dialect. A humorous and exciting story of love, deceit and misunderstandings has been cleverly wrapped around catchy tunes, like â??Alperoseâ?? and â??Schwanâ?? by some of the greatest Swiss bands. â??Ewigi Liebiâ?? was first performed in 2007 in Zurich and moved to Bern in the fall of 2010. Now the successful musical is returning to Zurich for its grand finale. Hurry to catch the very last performance of the popular show in June 2012.

Papiersaal Sihlcity: World Press Photo 12

The World Press Photo of the Year 2011 was selected in Amsterdam at the beginning of February.
The winner is Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda with his picture of Fatima al-Qaws. The touring exhibition with the award-winning photos will visit some 100 cities in 45 countries around the world. KEYSTONE is presenting the “World Press Photo 12” exhibition with accompanying events at the Papiersaal Sihlcity, Zürich.
