Uetliberg

At 2850 feet above sea level, Uetliberg towers over the rooftops of Zürich.
The mountain affords an impressive panoramic view of the city, the lake and the Alps.

The Uetliberg is particularly popular in November, as its summit is often above the blanket of fog that can cover the city at this time of year. In the winter, the hiking trails to the summit are converted into sledding runs.

In summer, there’s plenty to discover on well-marked hiking routes, a mountain bike route, and on the Planet Trail. This hour-and-a-half to two-hour walk from Uetliberg to Felsenegg (Adliswil) takes you on a fascinating tour through a model of our solar system.
Approach

The S10 service of the Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn SZU railway, Europe’s steepest normal-gauge adhesion railway, runs from Zürich Main Station to Uetliberg Station, a ten-minute walk from the summit.

Price for the 4-zone ticket:
Adults: CHF 16 / Children: CHF 8
Free ride with the ZürichCARD.
Further information at www.zvv.ch

Activities

You have the possibility of climbing to the top of Uetliberg mountain (approx. 1 hour):
  • The varied Denzlerweg leads almost straight up from Albisguetli (last stop on the number 13 tram line) to the summit.
  • Laternenweg also leads from Albisguetli slightly further westwards up to the ridge.
  • The Hohensteinweg leads up from Triemli (last stop on the number 14 tram line) over a shoulder of the mountain and is especially popular in the winter as a sledging run.
  • A woodland path leads up from Uitikon-Waldegg (car park) to the summit. This path has the smallest incline.

There is also a mountain bike route that begins at the television tower and takes bikers over 3.5 km and a difference in altitude of 350 m down to the Triemli SZU station.

Zoo Zurich & Masoala Rainforest

Elephants, rhinos, penguins and 20 species of monkeys are just some of the animals on the Zürichberg that will transport you into an exotic world – with all your senses.

Explore the rainforest along a twisting path and gain insight into a typical rainforest dense with palms and inhabited by lemurs and turtles and discover sparse swamp areas with a myriad of brightly-colored frogs.
Possibility to hold events in the adjacent restaurant with a stunning view of the rainforest.

The China Garden is located directly on the lake near Zürichhorn and was a gift from Zürich’s sister city Kunming in China. The present was an expression of gratitude for Zürich’s assistance in expanding the potable water facilities in Kunming. The park is one of the most beautiful Chinese gardens outside of China. Enea Tree Museum

The idea of creating a tree museum resulted from Enzo Enea’s work as a landscape architect.

There are over 50 trees from more than 25 species in the museum, some of which are more than 100 years old, and they produce an aura of solid immortality. They also highlight the significance of time in our hectic daily lives. A further 100 trees and plants can be found in the park surrounding the Tree Museum.

Guided hiking tour to the Top of Uetliberg

This excursion to the countryside appeals to guests who enjoy hiking off the beaten track and are in average to good physical condition. An unforgettable experience and surprising views are guaranteed. Europe’s largest yew tree forest is located on the Northern slopes of the Uetliberg, and narrow tracks facilitate close contact with nature. Zürich’s local mountain can be challenging, and participants should be equipped with light walking shoes for the uphill trek spanning a difference in altitude of 400 m/437 yards. Taking a snack and a rain jacket if the weather is uncertain is recommended. We begin our tour with a 15-minute tram ride via Bahnhofstrasse and Paradeplatz to Albisgütli. Anyone who is tired or would like to avoid the descent because of knee problems, for example, can travel back down independently by rail from the Uetliberg terminus. Our experienced Toptrek guide provides periodic explanations along the way and looks forward to your questions. Groups usually consist of no more than six people.
Please make your reservation (preferably by email, or phone) as quickly as possible up to 14:00 pm the day before. The hike ends at a station on the Uetlibergbahn (S10) with a direct connection back to the main station. Accident insurance is the responsibility of the participants.

If less than three people sign up for the tour, then after consultation (no later than the evening before) and decision by the interested parties, the tour will either take place on payment of a supplement (2 people, CHF 20 each, one person, CHF 80), or be cancelled.

Weekdays:
Tue & Thu; other times and days (incl. Sat & Sun) on request.

For further guided hiking, biking and cross-country skiing tours please refer to www.toptrek.ch.

Lindenhof

This spot provides a glorious view of the Old Town, Grossmünster Church, City Hall, the Limmat river, the university and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Lindenhof was also the scene of numerous historical events.
In the 4th century, a Roman fort stood on Lindenhof. It served as protection for the occupying Roman forces as well as the local population in the event of attacks by the Alemanni.
In the 9th century, the grandson of Charlemagne built a regal palace as a residence on this site.
This area continued to be a place for gatherings for Zürich’s inhabitants right up to the beginning of the modern era. For example, the oath sealing the Helvetic Constitution was taken on Lindenhof in 1798.
Today, Lindenhof is a haven of peace and tranquility in the heart of the city and a meeting point for passionate chess players.

Old Botanical Garden

The history of the Old Botanical Gardens dates back to the year 1837. In the second half of the 20th century when its location became too cramped and the shade from the surrounding apartment buildings affected the growth of the plants, the Botanical Gardens were moved to the other side of the city. An idyllic park with old trees and a glass pavilion that is protected as a national monument remain to be enjoyed today.

Rieterpark

The 83,000 sq yd Rieterpark is Zürich's largest and most impressive landscape garden and is located in the Zürich Enge area of the city, not far from Lake Zürich.

The park and its villa (today known as Museum Rietberg) were built in 1855 and were taken over at the end of the 19th century by the Winterthur industrial family Rieter, and became the property of the city in 1945. Some beech trees in the park are still part of the original grove and are over 150 years old.

When the weather is clear, the Glarner Alps provide an optical end point, creating a sense of unending vastness.
